Bangs Phobia
Joy Hughes had an unusual phobia- she's scared terrified of bangs. She can trace her fear back to the age of three when she had earache from whooping cough and wanted to go to a fireworks display.
"I can remember the terrible pain in my ears from the loud bangs and from that day I would scream, cover my ears and run away when I thought I was going to hear a bang if I saw a balloon I used to panic and run away incase it burst, even if that meant running into traffic."
Her phobia got worse as she grew older, despite her parents taking her to be treated by psychiatrists. "I stayed in hospital for weeks getting relaxation treatment and therapy but nothing worked" Said Joy. She grew up in Northern Ireland. Her fear got worse during the troubles when friends were shot. When Joy and her husband moved to Scotland to open a flower shop her phobia worsened. "In Northern Ireland during the troubles fireworks were banned but when we came over to Scotland it was a nightmare around fireworks night. I wouldn't leave the house for fear of hearing a firework and I couldn't go into work."
She was amazed when Ali was able to cure her after just 2 hour long sessions. To prove he had cured her, Alastair took Joy to a field where she set off three huge display fireworks. Joy said "I couldn't believe I was going near fireworks let alone lighting them it was amazing."
